Comfortable wasn’t enough anymore. After getting married, Daniha and her husband knew they wanted something that felt more like them — a place they could change, host people in, and actually call home. They had been renting a two-bedroom apartment that Daniha called a 1.5 bedroom, because one room was so small they used it as a closet. It was time for something more.
Finding Acts Housing
Daniha heard about Acts Housing through a community partner at St. Augustine. That’s how most Acts families get started — through a friend, a neighbor, a coworker who did it first.
She signed up and joined the 2025 Women’s Cohort, which began in July of 2025. In collaboration with World Outreach Church, Safe and Sound, and Milwaukee Urban League, women from across Milwaukee were given a space to come together, share a meal, bring their kids, and work toward a common goal: homeownership. Daniha graduated, earned her homebuyer education certificate — a key requirement for many down payment assistance programs and grants — and was ready to get to work.
A Different Timeline
When Daniha met with her homebuyer coach, they brought up a recent bankruptcy on her record. Most lenders require a two-year waiting period after bankruptcy to demonstrate responsible financial behavior. But Daniha had good credit and paid her bills on time. She knew she was ready — she just needed a lender who could see that too.
Her coach pointed her toward Acts Lending. Unlike traditional institutions, Acts Lending works with families who may not fit the conventional mold. For Daniha, that meant one thing: show six months of solid payments, and she could be pre-approved that same year.
“I had no idea all of this was an option. I thought I was going to have to wait.”
Smooth Sailing — and What That Really Means
Daniha describes her journey as smooth sailing, but she’s quick to put that in context. The biggest obstacle, she says, was believing homeownership was possible in the timeframe she wanted. Once she learned what Acts could offer, that changed.
She also knows her experience isn’t everyone’s. Daniha expressed real appreciation for the way Acts prepares families for what’s ahead — not just the easy parts.
“I do like how the Acts program explains the challenges that may come up. And when I tell you Acts has an answer — or if they don’t have it right away, which is rare — they are really good at telling you, ‘I’ll find out and get back to you.’ And they actually do.”
Closing Day
Daniha closed on April 7th and rang the celebratory gong in the Acts Milwaukee office — a tradition used to mark the big wins.
She still gets emotional talking about it:
“It felt surreal. You talk about the moment, you dream about it for so long, and then it becomes reality. And then the support continues — to have everybody on the floor come in and meet you, people who don’t even know you, but they’re excited for you. I felt that in the room. You fight through this process, it’s scary, but to have everybody cheering for you, rooting for you — it’s special.”
What Homeownership Means
Not every family that works with Acts looks the same, and that’s by design. In 2025, Acts Lending originated $4.4 million in home loans for 37 families — many of whom, like Daniha, were told by traditional lenders to wait. The coaches, lending team, and everyone in between work to find creative solutions for families who are willing to put in the work.
When asked what homeownership means to her, Daniha didn’t overthink it.
“Proud. Like a kid that’s line leader for the week. You feel accomplished.”
And then she kept going.
“Even though you are responsible for everything now — you can’t call a landlord — it is freedom. Because it’s yours. That feeling of yours. And beyond that, legacy.”
“A house to pass on to my children, my grandchildren, their children. My two daughters live out of town — I now have a place for them to come home to. And one day — do I dare dream — they’ll both be there at the same time. It’s a place for family to come and just be. For me and him to just be.”
Homeownership doesn’t always follow a straight line. Acts Housing works in the grey areas, at the intersections of real life where traditional systems often fall short. That’s not a gap we work around. It’s exactly where we’re meant to be.
