Japri’s journey to homeownership started the same way many great journeys do: with family. Living in Beloit, Japri first heard about Acts Housing through her cousin, Victoria—an Acts family who was also working with our team on the path to homeownership. Seeing Victoria stay committed to the process helped reinforce for Japri that homeownership was within reach.
That connection planted a seed, and after entering the program around the same time, both cousins stayed the course. In 2024, they each reached a major milestone—Victoria closing on her home in September and Japri closing the following month in October—turning long-term goals into accomplishments they’ll carry for years to come.
What stands out most about Japri, according to her homebuyer coach Shelby, is her steady dedication. Japri stayed in the program for nearly two years, consistently showing up, staying engaged, and refusing to give up—even when progress didn’t come as quickly as she hoped. Shelby shared,
It can be easy to get discouraged when something comes up, but Japri was always positive and kept putting one foot in front of the other.
Along the way, Japri took full advantage of opportunities to build her knowledge and strengthen her finances. She attended Acts online Homebuyer Education workshops to grow her understanding of the homebuying process and increase her savings. She also used the Milwaukee Jewish Free Loan Association (MJFLA) to pay down debt faster and reduce her monthly payments—an important step that helped her become mortgage-ready.
And the impact of Japri’s success didn’t stop with her. As Victoria and Japri moved through the process side-by-side, their progress became an encouragement within the family. Now, Japri is sharing her experience with another family member—Nikita, who is currently in the Acts program and working toward homeownership herself. What began as two cousins committing to the journey is growing into a family legacy of stability and opportunity.
