Meet Shirley: A Milwaukee Homeownership Story Powered by Coaching

Sometimes, the first step toward homeownership starts with a simple conversation.

Acts Housing’s offices are on the fifth floor of the MGIC building, where Shirley works in the MGIC café. It’s a familiar stop for our staff during the workday, and one day, a casual conversation between Shirley and an Acts Housing Homebuyer Coach turned into something more.

That conversation introduced Shirley to Acts Housing and inspired her to pursue a goal she may not have thought was within reach: owning a home.

Working with a Homebuyer Coach

After connecting with Acts Housing, Shirley worked with an Acts Homebuyer Coach to understand what it would take to become mortgage-ready. Together, they created a plan based on Shirley’s financial situation and homeownership goals.

A Homebuyer Coach works one-on-one with each client to help them prepare for homeownership. For some, that means improving their credit or paying down debt. For others, it’s building savings or learning how the homebuying process works. Every journey is different, and coaching is tailored to each person’s needs.

Staying Committed

Shirley stayed focused on her goal throughout the process. Although she didn’t use Acts Lending or purchase an Acts Homes, she successfully bought a home that had previously been owned by an out-of-state investment company.

Her journey wasn’t without challenges. Along the way, her air conditioning unit was stolen, but she continued moving forward and stayed committed to becoming a homeowner.

Her Homebuyer Coach reflected on Shirley’s determination:

“Once Shirley decided to pursue homeownership, she remained committed to that goal. Despite facing challenges, Shirley persevered. I was honored to be a part of her journey.”

Thinking About Homeownership? Here’s the Truth

Many people assume they need perfect credit or a large down payment before they can start thinking about homeownership. The reality is that everyone’s journey looks different.

Whether you’re hoping to buy a home soon or you’re just beginning to explore the idea, a Homebuyer Coach can help you understand where you are today and what steps can help you reach your goal.

For Shirley, it all started with one conversation in the MGIC café. Today, she’s a homeowner.
