Victoria McAlister’s Path to Homeownership: Powered by Acts Housing and Rooted in Community

Legacy Meets Opportunity in Beloit

When Victoria McAlister began her path to homeownership, she wasn’t starting from scratch—she was building on generations of perseverance. Her mother has lived in the same Beloit home since 1956. Her grandfather, Walter R. Knight, was not only a civic leader but also Beloit’s first African American city councilor, a legacy honored through the Portland Avenue Bridge that now bears his name. Her great-grandfather rose from sharecropping to landownership, creating a foundation of generational strength.

“I come from homeowners,” Victoria says. “That history made me believe I could do this too.”

But legacy alone doesn’t close the gap to homeownership. Victoria needed a partner—and that’s where Acts Housing stepped in.

Customized Coaching and End-to-End Support

When Victoria connected with Acts Housing, she had no credit history, had experienced an unexpected move, and was navigating a complex and often intimidating real estate process. Through our holistic model, she was paired with a homebuyer coach who helped her build credit, set goals, and prepare financially.

Victoria also received lending support through Acts Lending, which offers flexible and mission-aligned financing options for buyers who may not qualify through traditional channels. Throughout her journey, her coach, lender, and real estate support worked in sync—ensuring a smooth, aligned process from start to finish.

Additionally, Acts helped Victoria apply for and secure $7,500 in grant awards, a critical resource that made her purchase possible.

A Community Comes Together

Acts’ support was part of a broader ecosystem of encouragement. Victoria’s Acts realtor, who had known her since high school, provided personalized guidance and advocacy—another example of how deep community ties and professional expertise intersect in Beloit. Family and neighbors offered encouragement along the way, but it was Acts Housing that delivered the structure, accountability, and tools to turn possibility into progress.

Every time I hit a roadblock, someone was there—whether it was my homebuyer coach helping me fix my credit or my Acts realtor fighting for me when grants got complicated. That’s Beloit—and that’s what Acts does. You’re never on your own.

Reaching the Finish Line

Victoria closed on her new home in September of 2024. The house—newly constructed—represents more than a real estate purchase. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when personal determination is matched with community-driven solutions.

By combining coaching, lending, and grants, Acts Housing helped Victoria overcome barriers that keep too many families from reaching homeownership. Today, she’s not just a homeowner—she’s part of a long line of leaders and changemakers building wealth and stability through real estate.

Why Victoria’s Story Matters

Victoria’s experience reflects Acts Housing’s core mission: to make homeownership possible for families often excluded by traditional systems. Her story demonstrates:

  • Coaching leads to long-term readiness: Credit repair, budgeting, and personalized planning build real capacity.
  • Access to lending is critical: Acts Lending bridges the financing gap with products designed for working families.
  • Grants amplify affordability: Down payment support can unlock ownership for buyers on the margin.
  • Community connections make it work: Acts collaborates with realtors, lenders, and families to create a path forward.

This house isn’t just mine—it’s ours.

At Acts Housing, we believe in that vision. Every new homeowner is a win for the individual—and a win for the community.
