Maria always wanted a big, spacious sun-filled kitchen. She knew she wanted it painted yellow with lots of plants in the window sills to remind her of her native country of Honduras. Her dream kitchen has come true!
Maria and Angel had completely given up on buying a home. They had spent the last 8 years applying at several local banks and were actually pre-approved for a mortgage loan several times, only to be disappointed with new requirements as they moved through the loan process, “It seemed like new requirements would come up at the last minute, which made it impossible for us to close on a home”, stated Angel.
Their friends, Ana and Jose, started telling them about the Acts program that they were part of, “We saw our friends buying a home and fixing it up. When I saw that, I thought, wow! We can do the same thing!” said Maria. They became encouraged by seeing their friends finish the program successfully and making their house a home.
They now live a short 5-minute drive to their friends’ house. They love hanging out together at each other’s homes, and celebrating life’s biggest and smallest moments together. Angel says “If it weren’t for them and for Acts we would still be renting and paying a lot more than we pay now, for something we don’t even own.”
Since completing the program, Angel and Maria have encouraged 2 other family members to enter the program. Angel even helps out with their rehabs on his days off and weekends. “They need help, just like I needed help”, he added. “Together, we can make the process go faster and they can move in sooner.”
