You can tell that Yuselff and Nakeita Dismukes are proud homeowners before you even walk into the house. From the seasonal décor on the porch and front door to the tidy lawn and beautiful stone façade, you’d probably be surprised to learn that this home was a foreclosed property that sat vacant for over a year.
Nakeita learned about Acts Housing a few years ago; in the summer of 2019, she and Yuselff decided that they needed to find a big home for them and their four kids. Nakeita says, “I do well with deadlines. Tony (their Acts homebuyer counselor) told me what needed to get done, and by when; he kept us on-track and we got pre-approved in November.”
After being pre-approved for a loan from Acts Lending, Yuselff and Nakeita started working with their Acts realtor, Jenean, to find a duplex that they could convert to a single-family. After seeing a dozen properties without finding one within their budget and ability to rehab, they were close to giving up on their dream of homeownership. Nakeita shared that the house that they’ve made their home was a last-chance; she dreamed of it the night before they saw it!
When the Dismukes’ closed on their home in March, 2020, they kept it a secret from the children until they were ready to move in. They quickly cleaned out debris and hired contractors to bring the plumbing, electric, and fireplace up to code. Not only did they work diligently to complete their rehab quickly, by the time they moved in, each kid had their own bedroom dedicated to their personal taste. From the Milwaukee Bucks to chandeliers to original artwork and light-up accessories, Nakeita says it’s hard to get the children to come OUT of their rooms these days.
